नवदुर्गा- द्वितीय ब्रह्मचारिणी

नवरात्री पर्व के दूसरे दिन माँ “ब्रह्मचारिणी” की पूजा-अर्चना की जाती है। साधक इस दिन अपने मन और ध्यान को माँ के चरणों में लगाते हैं। यदि विस्तार पूर्वक देखा जाये तो ब्रह्म का अर्थ है तपस्या और चारिणी यानी आचरण करने वाली। इस प्रकार ब्रह्मचारिणी का अर्थ होता है तप का आचरण करने वाली।

माता देवी ने भगवान शंकर को पति रूप में प्राप्त करने के लिए अत्यंत घोर तपस्या की थी। इस कठिन तपस्या के कारण ही इस देवी को तपश्चारिणी अर्थात्‌ ब्रह्मचारिणी नाम से अभिहित किया गया।

शास्त्रों और पौराणिक मान्यताओं के आधार पर कहते है जातक को माँ ब्रह्मचारिणी देवी की कृपा से सर्वसिद्धि प्राप्त होती है। दुर्गा पूजा के दूसरे दिन देवी के इसी स्वरूप की उपासना की जाती है। इस देवी की कथा का पूर्ण सार यह है कि मनुष्य को जीवन के कठिन संघर्षों में भी मन विचलित नहीं करना चाहिए।

मन्त्र:

दधाना करपद्माभ्यामक्षमाला-कमण्डलू ।
देवी प्रसीदतु मयि ब्रह्मचारिण्यनुत्तमा॥

• इस श्लोक में अनुत्तमा का अर्थ “जिनसे अधिक उत्तम कोई नहीं” ऐसे होता है। और अक्षमाला-कमण्डलू शब्द में दो वस्तू होने के कारण कमण्डलु शब्द के द्विवचन का प्रयोग है।

माता ब्रह्माचारिणी जी की आरती

कहानी:

पौराणिक कथाओं और शास्त्रों के अनुसार पूर्वजन्म में इस देवी ने हिमालय के घर पुत्री रूप में जन्म लिया था और नारदजी के उपदेश से भगवान शंकर जी को पति रूप में प्राप्त करने के लिए माता ने घोर तपस्या की थी। इस कठिन तपस्या के कारण ही इन्हें तपश्चारिणी अर्थात्‌ ब्रह्मचारिणी नाम से अभिहित किया गया। एक हजार वर्ष तक इन्होंने केवल फल-फूल खाकर ही बिताए और सौ वर्षों तक केवल जमीन पर रहकर शाक पर निर्वाह किया।

कुछ दिनों तक माता ने कठिन उपवास रखे और खुले आकाश के नीचे वर्षा और धूप के घोर कष्ट सहे। तीन हजार वर्षों तक माता ने केवल टूटे हुए बिल्व पत्र खाए और भगवान शंकर की आराधना करती रहीं। इसके बाद तो माता आराधना मे इतनी लीन रहने लगी की उन्होंने सूखे बिल्व पत्र खाना भी छोड़ दिए। और ऐसे ही कई हजार वर्षों तक निर्जल और निराहार रह कर तपस्या करती रहीं। पत्तों को खाना छोड़ देने के कारण ही इनका नाम अपर्णा नाम पड़ गया।

इतनी कठिन तपस्या के कारण देवी का शरीर एकदम क्षीण हो गया था। देवता, ऋषि, सिद्धगण, मुनि सभी ने ब्रह्मचारिणी की तपस्या को एक अभूतपूर्व पुण्य कृत्य बताया, माता की खूब सराहना की और कहा “हे देवी आज तक किसी ने इस तरह की कठोर तपस्या नहीं की है। यह तपस्या करना तुम्हीं से ही सम्भव थी। तुम्हारी मनोकामना शीघ्र ही परिपूर्ण होगी और भगवान चन्द्रमौलि शिवजी तुम्हें पति रूप में शीघ्र ही प्राप्त होंगे। अब तपस्या छोड़कर अपने पिता के घर लौट जाओ। जल्द ही तुम्हारे पिता तुम्हें बुलाने के लिए आ रहे हैं।”

तब यह सुनकर ब्रह्मचारी ने तपस्या करना छोड़ दिया और खुशी-खुशी अपने पिता के घर चली गई। वहां जाने के कुछ ही दिन बाद माता को शिव शंकर पति के रूप में प्राप्त हो गए।

Mother “Brahmacharini” is worshiped on the second day of Navratri festival. On this day sadhaks put their mind and attention at the feet of the mother. If seen in detail, Brahma means penance and Charini means one who conducts. Thus Brahmacharini means the one who practices austerity.

Mata Devi had done severe penance to get Lord Shankar as her husband. Due to this difficult penance, this goddess was named as Tapascharini i.e. Brahmacharini.

On the basis of the scriptures and mythological beliefs, it is said that the person gets all the accomplishments by the grace of Mother Brahmacharini Devi. This form of Goddess is worshiped on the second day of Durga Puja. The whole essence of the story of this goddess is that man should not be disturbed even in the difficult struggles of life.

Mantra:

Dadhana karpadmabhyamakshamala-kamandalu.
Devi Prasidatu Mayi Brahmacharinyanuttama.

• In this verse, the meaning of Anuttama is “one who is better than whom”. And in the word Akshamala-Kamandlu, due to the presence of two objects, there is a use of the dual of the word Kamandlu.

Story:

According to mythology and scriptures, this goddess was born as a daughter in the house of Himalaya in the previous birth and the mother did severe penance to get Lord Shankar as her husband by the teachings of Naradji. Due to this difficult penance, she was named Tapascharini i.e. Brahmacharini. For a thousand years, he spent only eating fruits and flowers and for a hundred years he lived only on the ground and subsistence on vegetables.

For a few days, the mother kept a strict fast and under the open sky suffered severe rain and sun. For three thousand years, the mother ate only broken bilva leaves and worshiped Lord Shiva. After this, the mother became so absorbed in worship that she even stopped eating dried bilva leaves. And like this for several thousand years she continued to do penance by being waterless and helpless. She got the name Aparna because of leaving the leaves to eat.

Due to such severe penance, the body of the goddess had become completely emaciated. The deities, sages, siddhas, sages all described the penance of Brahmacharini as an unprecedented virtuous act, greatly appreciated the mother and said, “O Goddess, till date no one has done such harsh penance. It was possible only from you to do this penance. Your wish will be fulfilled soon and Lord Chandramauli Shiva will soon get you in the form of husband. Now leave penance and return to your father’s house. Soon your father is coming to call you.”

Hearing this, the brahmachari stopped doing penance and happily went to her father’s house. A few days after going there, the mother got Shiva Shankar as her husband.
